Privacy Policy
The short version
JAML does not collect, store, transmit or sell any personal information. The app has no servers, no accounts, no analytics and no advertising. It is not granted Android’s INTERNET permission, so it has no technical means of sending data anywhere. Everything you configure stays in the app’s private storage on your device.
1. Who this policy covers
This policy applies to the JAML Android application (package com.jaml, the “App”) and to the website at jaml.tannerkirkendall.com (the “Site”), both operated by Tanner Kirkendall (“the Developer”, “we”, “us”).
2. Information the App collects
None. The App does not collect personal information, device identifiers, contacts, location, advertising IDs, usage analytics or crash telemetry. It does not ask you to create an account or provide an email address. There is no first-party or third-party analytics, attribution or advertising software development kit embedded in the App.
3. Information stored on your device
To function as a launcher, the App keeps a small amount of configuration in its own private storage area, readable only by the App itself under Android’s application sandbox:
- The package name and display name of apps installed on your device, together with the category you assigned them (Home, Favorite or Hidden) and your chosen home screen ordering.
- Your appearance preferences: font family, text size, text color, background color or wallpaper mode, line spacing and text alignment.
- Your behavior preferences: search bar position, whether the screen time line is shown and at what size, whether a single search result launches automatically, and whether the first-launch wizard has been completed.
This data never leaves your device through the App. Clearing the App’s storage in Android Settings, or uninstalling the App, removes all of it.
4. Permissions the App requests, and why
QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES — required
Lets the App read the list of applications installed on your device. A launcher that cannot see your apps cannot display, order, search or start them. The App reads this list locally to build your home screen, favorites screen and search results, and to notice when apps are installed or removed. Nothing about the list is transmitted or shared.
PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS — optional
Powers the optional screen time line on the home screen (for example 3h 19m). This setting is off by default. It only takes effect if you enable it in the App’s settings and separately grant Usage Access in Android’s system settings, which Android requires you to do by hand. The App reads today’s aggregate foreground time from Android’s UsageStatsManager, displays it, and does not record or transmit it. Declining or later revoking this permission leaves every other feature working normally.
What the App deliberately does not request
The App does not declare the INTERNET permission, nor request access to your location, camera, microphone, contacts, calendar, SMS, call logs, files or photos. Android enforces this at the operating system level — it is a property of the package you install, not a promise about our conduct. You can verify it yourself in the App’s manifest, or in the Play Store’s permission details for the listing.
5. Android system backup
The App allows Android’s standard Auto Backup. If you have device backup switched on in your Android settings, the operating system may include the App’s configuration — the categories, ordering and appearance settings described in section 3 — in the encrypted backup it stores in your own Google account, so your setup is restored when you move to a new device. That transfer is performed by Android, not by the App, and is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy. You can turn device backup off in Android Settings at any time.
6. Distribution through Google Play
The App is distributed through the Google Play Store. When you download or update it, Google processes that interaction under its own privacy policy, and provides the Developer with aggregated, non-identifying statistics such as install counts, country-level breakdowns, ratings and — where you choose to send them — anonymized crash reports. We do not receive your name, email address, phone number or any identifier that would let us recognize you. See the Google Privacy Policy for how Google handles that data.
7. This website
The Site is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics or advertising scripts, embeds no third-party fonts, trackers or social widgets, and asks for no personal information. Our hosting provider records standard server logs — such as IP address, user agent, requested URL and timestamp — for a limited period, which is necessary to serve the pages and defend against abuse. We do not use those logs to build profiles or to identify visitors.
8. Data sharing
We have no personal data to share, sell, rent or trade, and we do not do any of those things. We would disclose information only if compelled by valid legal process — and in practice we hold nothing that could be produced.
9. Children’s privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13, and it collects no information from anyone, including children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us in some way, contact us and we will act on it, though as described above we do not knowingly hold any.
10. Your rights
Privacy laws such as the GDPR, the UK GDPR and the CCPA/CPRA give you rights to access, correct, delete, port and restrict the processing of your personal data, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. Because we neither collect nor process personal data, there is nothing for us to retrieve, correct, export or erase — and nothing to sell. You retain complete control of the App’s local data: clear its storage or uninstall the App and the data is gone. 11. Data retention and security
We retain no user data, so there is no retention schedule to describe. Data stored on your device is protected by Android’s application sandbox and by whatever device encryption, PIN or biometric lock you have enabled.
12. Changes to this policy
If the App’s behavior changes in a way that affects your privacy, this policy will be updated and the “last updated” date at the top of this page will change. Material changes will be described in the App’s release notes on Google Play. Continuing to use the App after an update means you accept the revised policy.
